‘Forgetting what is behind…’
Last Sunday we considered the goal that Paul pressed on towards with energetic zeal; to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. This involves, as well as straining forwards, ‘forgetting what is behind’; not allowing past failures to paralyse us or past success to be a cause for complacency. Are you doing that?
Of course the call to ‘forget’ is not an absolute one. As believers we must also ‘remember’. This morning we will remember. We will remember and gratefully celebrate the death of Jesus in the place of sinners. We will remember the great love – of the Father and the Son - that was displayed so gloriously and poignantly at Calvary. We will remember that on that epochal day our sins were definitively dealt with by the atoning death of Jesus in our place. We will remember that the cry ‘It is finished’ that pierced the silence of that dreadful day reverberates with power even today reminding us that everything that is needful for our salvation has been graciously provided by our Saviour.
And as we remember we give thanks. And as we remember may we also be driven to press on with Pauline zeal to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings
