Kumbaya in Bon Accord?

The Plenary Assembly back in November granted to Kirk Sessions the responsibility of deciding on the use or otherwise of instrumental music and of uninspired materials of praise in the worship services of the Free Church.

So what has the Bon Accord Kirk Session decided on the matter? A very reasonable question some of you may be asking.

The first meeting of Session following the Assembly was on Monday (our December meeting fell foul of the weather) and following an informal sharing of views it was decided to more formally consider the matter of our response to the decision of the Plenary Assembly at the February meeting of Session. The date fixed is the 14th of February thus ensuring a ‘lottaluv' will permeate the meeting and inform our deliberations. Any suggestion that the date lends itself to a St. Valentine's Day Massacre is not appreciated!

In all seriousness prayer is requested that wisdom might be granted not only to the elders of our congregation but to all who are part of and love the Free Church and who, more importantly, consider the worship of the living and true God a matter of the utmost solemnity and privilege.

Tea and Coffee: Tea, coffee and biscuits are served downstairs in the hall after the morning and evening services. Everyone is very welcome to come downstairs and join us for this.

The Senior Citizen's Fellowship lunch will be this Thursday (20th) at 12:30pm in the small hall. All welcome.

Ladies Support Group: A meeting of the ladies support group will be held on Thursday 20th at 7.30pm in the manse. All lady members of the congregation are welcome to this meeting where practical ways of supporting the minister in his work in the congregation will be discussed

Next Sunday (23rd) we will have a Congregational Fellowship after the evening service which will consist in a time of praise and testimony (roughly from 7:00pm to 8:00pm).

Prayer was requested in November for Oliver Gill (a nephew of Katherine Sced's sister). Sadly Oliver passed away on Christmas Day and prayer is still sought for his parents Andy & Jennifer in the light of their sad loss.

Aberdeen Christian Medical Fellowship has recently established a young doctors' group. We aim to help provide fellowship, encouragement and social events for young Christian medics and final year students. Our first event of 2011 is a Burns Supper on Thursday 27th January. If you would like further details about the group or the Burns Supper please contact Alistair Revolta alistair.revolta@nhs.net or Jo Ford joanna.lindsay@doctors.org.uk.

The minister will be travelling to India from the 24th of January to the 8th of February as a delegate of the International Missions Board. The services on the 30th of January will be taken by Jonathan Worthington and on the 6th of February by the Rev. Calum Macmillan (Rosskeen).

Afternoon service - We have been on our new timetable for just over a month and, so far,  the bad weather has made it difficult to assess the convenience / impact  or otherwise of the new times. I am particularly - though by no means exclusively - interested in feedback (and indeed ideas) from parents as to whether the 5:30pm start and service content is helpful for families. Just grab me and give me your thoughts, complaints, ideas... whatever... I am pretty thick skinned and not easily offended!

Bookstall - New Books: The bookstall has a selection of new books for the New Year.  Many of the books have received very positive reviews in the Free Church of Scotland's monthly Record over the last few months.   Amongst the notable authors are John Piper, Timothy Keller and Donald Macleod.  The new books will be
available to browse at the bookstall or on the Bon Accord website.
