Right or wrong?
The Children's Commissioner Dr Maggie Atkinson has apologized to Denise Fergus for remarks made in the context of expressing her view that the age of criminal responsibility in England should be raised to twelve (in Scotland it stands at eight). The matter has led to much debate with varying viewpoints being expressed.
Of greater interest to me has been the related question debated as to the age at which children can differentiate between right and wrong. Different views are expressed but nobody seems to recognize a fundamental underlying problem; as a society we have lost any meaningful understanding or shared consensus as to what is right and what is wrong. We have rejected the notion that such categories are fixed and absolute.
We are all fumbling in the dark. Not just children but their parents and teachers and the very authorities responsible for legislating on these matters. All, it would seem, are free to determine for themselves what is right and what is wrong. The result is chaos.
We need not fumble. Our Creator has lovingly revealed to us in the Bible that which is right and that which is wrong; he has done so for our good. Knowledge of the Bible and a submission to its authority will both direct us and mould our consciences allowing both children and adults to know the difference between right and wrong.
Then of course there is the small matter of doing what is right and rejecting what is wrong, there we all fail continually but - thank God - we have in Jesus one who is ever ready to forgive us.

Neighbourhood Fellowships - The fellowships meet again this week, if you haven't made it along yet please do so this Wednesday (or Thursday for the Mannofield group).
Parish Visitation - As many of you know Bon Accord joins forces with other city centre churches every Christmas and Easter to jointly distribute invitations to our services. This Easter the distribution will take place on Monday the 29th from Hebron Evangelical Church and on Wednesday the 31st from Gilcomston South Church of Scotland. The distribution usually takes no more than an hour and the more volunteers the quicker the work can be done. Volunteer signup sheets will be available next Sunday (with exact times) but please take note of the dates and separate your time for one of the evenings.

Spring Conference: This year's annual Free Church Spring Conference will be held from 9th to 11th April at the Aviemore Inn. This year we are delighted to have Prof John L. MacKay and Rev. David MacPherson as our speakers. David and Martha MacPherson will also be leading the Missionary focus. A conference like this gives us the chance to meet people from churches all over the country - not necessarily "Free" - while enjoying times of praise and discussions as well as our main speakers. It is also an ideal opportunity for those who are perhaps getting a bit old for the Youth Conference to move on - come and give us your support!
The hotel usually gives us our own area of the dining room and a meeting room to hold the talks in; and there is plenty of time for fellowship over tea and coffee in comfortable surroundings. Saturday afternoon is always kept free so you can enjoy the Resort's facilities or visit the surrounding area.
The cost of the Conference includes full board - you won't even have to pay for a cup of tea or coffee - and full use of the Resort's Leisure facilities.
An advert and booking form for the conference was in the January Record and will also be in the February edition.
